A professional advice website has claimed that consumer requests for mortgages have doubled since January 2009.
According to unbiased.co.uk, there were almost 7,000 requests for details of mortgage advisers last month.
The latest Advice Drivers report found that 43 per cent of enquiries were from Britons seeking first-time buyer advice and 30 per cent were for those searching for remortgage support.
In addition, 20 per cent of enquiries were for residential advice, while 13 per cent were for buy-to-let help.
Karen Barrett, chief executive of unbiased.co.uk, explained that it was encouraging to see first-time buyers approaching the mortgage market with renewed optimism.
She said: "It appears many [first-time buyers] now feel they are in a position to investigate what's on the market and take the first steps."
In spite of this, the Council for Mortgage Lenders recently revealed that the number of Britons who lost their homes reached a 14-year high in 2009.
Research found that 48,000 homes were repossessed during the year, the highest number since 1995.
