People in the UK pay an average of £143 a week on housing costs, new figures show.
The research by the Office for National Statistics found that the average UK citizen was paying £52 a week on mortgages, £24 on council tax and other charges, £23 on housing alterations and £17 on rent.
It found that for households with a mortgage, the average weekly cost was £132. Those with mortgages in London paid the most, an average of £174 a week.
And with an average cost of £96 a week those with mortgages in Northern Ireland spent the least.
The study also found that the average rent paid by tenants in the UK was £60 a week. London was again the most expensive area, with people their paying £94 a week for their rented homes .
Figures released by the Bank of England revealed that total mortgage borrowing in the UK passed the £1 trillion mark in 2006.
