Almost half of people would give up alcohol in order to help them get onto the property ladder, it has emerged.
New research from financial services provider Abbey has found that 49 per cent of first-time buyers would be willing to abstain from drinking if they believed it could help them realise their property ambitions.
However, this figure apparently drops to 12 per cent in the north-east of England.
Meanwhile, 53 per cent admit that they would contemplate abandoning holiday plans to get a mortgage for a first home, while 43 per cent would abandon smoking.
Nici Audhlam Gardiner, head of mortgages at the banking solutions institution, commented on the sacrifices that may be facing some first-time buyers.
"With first-time buyers struggling to get onto the first rung of the property ladder, prospective homeowners are having to make big sacrifices to build their finances," the analyst said.
Abbey offers a host of fixed-rate mortgage deals, with introductory durations lasting between two and ten years in length.
In addition, the financial services provider also offers several savings accounts, credit cards, pensions and investments products.
