This Christmas may be a difficult time for some mortgage borrowers, according to one expert.
Louise Cumming, head of mortgages at moneysupermarket.com, said that millions of people coming to the end of their fixed-rate mortgage deals, the festive period is likley to be a "nervous time".
Responding to a recent report by Citizens Advice which suggested sub-prime lending practices had caused a number of problems within the market, Ms Cumming said that "many wider factors" had influenced the situation.
However, she said that the firm would be asking lenders if they could "do better by their customers".
"This will be absolutely vital next year when we may well head into stormier waters," she commented.
David Harker, chief executive of Citizens Advice, described the actions of some mortgage brokers and sub-prime lenders as "cavalier", arguing that better protection needs to be put in place for borrowers.
