Mortgage holders are being urged to make "noticeable" savings rather than planning to cut out luxury items when they review their finances at the start of 2006.
The One account says switching to an all-in-one account will result in "a much greater gain than a saving on a few takeaways".
Because 95 per cent of people overspend in December, many resolve to cut out small luxuries so they can save money, the One account found.
A total of 25 per cent say they will stop buying takeaways, with 22 per cent planning to abstain from eating chocolate and 21 per cent giving up cigarettes and crisps, according to the survey.
Debbie Milson, the PR manager of the One account, says the results of the survey "amaze" her.
"Saving money by stopping smoking or cutting down on nights out is something worth considering, however, if you want to make an impact over the long term, people should look at their larger expenses, like their mortgage," she says.
Ms Milson urges mortgage holders to re-assess their mortgage lenders to see if they are getting value for money.
"By switching to the One account, your savings can be used to offset your mortgage, making the very most of all those new year efforts," she explains.
The One account allows mortgage holders to make overpayments and underpayments, or take payment holidays.
