Options for offset mortgages
Tue, 21 Feb 2006
The popularity of offset mortgages is showing no signs of waning, with various mortgage experts urging those trying to find a mortgage to consider the benefits of offsetting.

Through offsetting, mortgage holders have the chance to cut the interest on their mortgage by balancing their home loan against savings.

This form of mortgage borrowing accounts for a third of the mortgage market , says Emma Keenes of Barclays Bank.

She says mortgage lenders recommend that people have savings that are equivalent to a fifth of their mortgage balance in order to make offsetting a useful option.

Ms Keenes adds: "If you are not offsetting that amount it may not make it worthwhile."

Meanwhile, financial services provider Intelligent Finance claims that one in three people trying to find a mortgage could benefit financially from opting for an offset mortgage.

Offset mortgages are described as being "a lifestyle tool" that could help mortgage borrowers maintain "flexible control" of their finances, says the provider's managing director Nick Robinson.

The head of communication at Intelligent Finance, Heather Scott, adds that since offset mortgages first became available five years ago, they have "definitely [been] making an impact".
