Search for a mortgage not helped by adverse credit problems, CCJ or bankruptcy
Tue, 18 Apr 2006
Britons on a search for a mortgage in the Midlands or Yorkshire are the most likely to be affected by adverse credit problems, county court judgement (CCJ) or bankruptcy, a new survey claims.

Research by credit report firm MyCallcredit found that households in the Midlands or the north had more CCJs registered against them than anywhere else in the country.

Households on a search for a mortgage in the Midlands-town Wolverhampton had a one in six chance of having a CCJ registered against them, while the survey also found that northern towns Bradford, Leeds, Hull, Doncaster, Huddersfield and Halifax were all in the top 20 places in England and Wales in terms of adverse credit problems, CCJ or bankruptcy.

Overall, one in every ten households was found to have adverse credit problems, CCJ or bankruptcy, with households having an average of 1.6 CCJs registered against them.

Alison Nicholson, director of MyCallcredit, explained that households with adverse credit problems, CCJ or bankruptcy could face problems in their search for a mortgage, but advised UK residents to compare mortgages before committing.

"Anyone who has a CCJ registered in their name may find it difficult to get further credit. But as there are many other factors that can affect your credit rating it's important for people to know what information is held about them before they apply for credit, that way they’ll make sure they get the best deal for them."
