Mortgage choice reversed, survey shows
Tue, 08 Nov 2005
The type of mortgage that customers prefer has reversed over the last ten years, the Survey of English Housing (SEH) reveals.

In contrast with a decade ago, two-thirds of mortgage borrowers today have repayment loans while only 25 per cent have interest-only mortgages , the Council of Mortgage Lenders cites the SEH report.

The situation for first time buyers has deteriorated over the last few years, the survey points out.

Four years ago, it was more likely for a person under the age of 30 to buy a home than to rent , according to the Council of Mortgage Lenders .

Today, however, 40 per cent of these people rent, while only 36 per cent take out a mortgage to buy their first home .

Fewer British homes have dependent children, but of families with kids, 81 per cent own their own home.

The social sector provides accommodation for the majority of single parents, 45 per cent, with 37 per cent of them owner-occupiers.

The SHE is a household survey that interviews a sample of 20,000 British households annually.
