Northern Rock

Northern Rock's roots go back to the 1850s in Newcastle.

The Society became the tenth largest building society in the UK after its merger with the Sunderland-based North of England Building Society in 1994.

In 1997, Northern Rock’s members voted overwhelmingly to convert to a public limited company. Northern Rock is the 8th largest UK bank and the largest financial institution based in the North East of England.

Following the credit crunch in late 2007, Northern Rock faced an extremely difficult period as their exposure to risk saw consumer confidence and share prices tumble. The Bank of England stepped in to loan the bank billions of pounds. A credit crunch casualty,

Northern Rock were briefly the subject of a fierce bidding war between major potential investors, before being nationalised by the labout government.

To date, Northern Rock remains nationalised. The Northern Rock mortgage range is subject to change under these new circumstances.

Northern Rock has a number of different mortgages and these are the main types:

  • Fixed
  • Flexible
  • Variable
  • Cash Back
  • Offset
  • Together

Northern Rock Mortgage Products

Fixed: your initial rate will be fixed for an agreed period. Your rate will be determined by the length of the fixed rate period and the mortgage product you choose. After the fixed rate period has finished the mortgage will revert to Northern Rock’s standard variable rate.

An early repayment charge may apply. An arrangement fee is applicable.

Flexible: this type of mortgage allows for flexibility in its repayments. You can make underpayments and even take payment holidays as long as you have made previous overpayments. You can combine this type of mortgage with others, such as fixed and variable, to get a competitive rate and flexible features.

Tracker: your mortgage rate is linked to the Bank of England base rate. It will be set at a rate just above it for an agreed period. A change in the interest rate will be passed on to your mortgage.

An early repayment charge may apply. An arrangement fee is applicable.

Cash Back: when your mortgage completes you will receive a one off lump sum payment from Northern Rock. The amount will depend on the size of your loan. You can then use this money to decorate your new property, take a holiday or pay for other expenses.

An early repayment charge may apply. An arrangement fee is applicable.

Offset: this type of mortgage is called ‘Connections mortgage’ – it is linked to your savings and/or current account. You can use the interest earned on your accounts to reduce your mortgage balance. This could mean your repayments are less. You can still withdraw money form your savings accounts. This type of mortgage is combined with a tracker mortgage.

There is no early repayment charge.

Together: this type of mortgage gives you the money to buy your house and provides you with a cash reserve as well at the same interest rate. It combines a secured mortgage with an unsecured loan. This can be worth up to 125% of your home’s value.

You can combine this with a fixed or variable rate mortgage product. An early repayment charge may apply.

Northern Rock also has a range of specialist mortgages:

Buy to Let: You can choose from one of its standard mortgages which include fixed rate and tracker options. There are also Buy to Let mortgages that have flexible options and have fixed and discount features.

Northern Rock also has a Lifetime mortgage which enables you to unlock the equity in your home. This type of mortgage is for homeowners aged 60 and over.

A Lifetime Mortgage allows you to benefit from the financial investment you’ve made in your house.

Interest will be added to your loan and the full amount is paid back when your home is eventually sold following your death (or the death of the second borrower if it is a joint application) or if you move into long-term care or sheltered accommodation.
