The Cape Verde Islands are a lesser-known paradise for overseas property investors. Coming more into public attention in the last few years, this chain of islands south of the Canaries offers tremendous scope for property development.
New, cheap flights from Europe have opened Cape Verde up for home-buyers who can still purchase at a tiny fraction of European prices.
The group of islands, ten major ones and eight islets, form an interdependent archipelago that retains extreme natural beauty. The islands, although they are now independent, rely on Portugal and African for some government. Fresh tourist interest has ignited a period of development in the islands.
Fringed by coral reefs, white sand beaches give way to tropical vegetation nurtured by a beautiful climate. For property investors, the pickings remain rich.

Sal is named after the salt-producing lagoon at its heart. The island, once called Llana, is relatively small and flat, the population centred around two key towns - Espargos (the capital) and Santa Maria, a tourist resort. Sale has an international airport, and its level of tourism grows every year. The population has nearly doubled in the last decade. Sal is highly regarded as a good site for property investment.
- Sao Vicente
Sao Vicente houses the second largest city in the Cape Verde chain. Mindelo offers an airport as well as a superb golf course. The island is small and volcanic, although few traces of the volcanoes remain. Sao Vicente and Mindelo in particular are regarded as cultural centres. Although smaller and less obvious as a holiday destination, Sao Vicente is also popular as a site for purchasing an international holiday home.
